How to make a sentence in Arabic?
THE SIMPLEST SENTENCE
The verb “to be” is practically not used in Arabic. It is considered to be the default. Because of this, the sentence look very simple. To form a simple statement, it is enough to add an indefinite adjective or noun to the personal pronoun. For example:
أَنَا كْرُوسْطُوفْ. أَنَا طَالِبٌ. أَنَا بُولَنْدِيٌّ. أَنَا وَسِيمٌ وَسَعِيدٌ
(I am Krzysztof. I am a student. I am Polish. I am handsome and happy.)
SECOND WAY
Compiling together definite and indefinite words can be problematic. It’s easiest to remember that:
Specified word + specific word OR Undefined word + undefined word OR Undefined word + specific word is an expression. For example
| EXAMPLE | MEANING | PRONUNCIATION |
|---|---|---|
| الجَزِيرَةُ الصَغِيرَةُ | small island | |
| بَلَدٌ كَبِيرٌ | big country | |
| شَايٌّ حَارٌّ | warm tea | |
| طَالِبَةٌ جَمِيلَةٌ | beautiful student (female) |
BUT
Defined word + undefined word creates a sentence with the default verb to be. For example
| EXAMPLE | MEANING | PRONUNCIATION |
|---|---|---|
| الجَامِعَةُ قَدِيمَةٌ | University is old. | |
| الرَّجُلُ وَسِيمٌ | Men is handsome. |
These are the two easiest methods for creating sentences. In the near future I will present two more methods, but first a little bit about prepositional phrases and demonstrative pronouns to keep everything simple.
